Ziadie races towards title at Florida racetrack
published: Saturday | December 29, 2007

Ziadie

MIAMI, Florida (CMC):

Jamaican trainer Kirk Ziadie has secured two wins in the last three race days as he steps closer to back-to-back Tropical Meet titles at Calder.

Ziadie won on Monday and again on Wednesday to boost his tally of wins to 29, 12 ahead of nearest rival Edward Plesa (17), with ex-champion William White lying third on 15.

The season ends on Wednesday.

In the US$12,000 fifth race over a mile on turf, Ziadie's four-year-old filly Greeleylikealady won by two lengths at odds of 6-to-1.

Under a patient ride from jockey Jose Lezcano, Greeleylikealady was at the back of the field down the backstretch and rallied decisively in the homestretch to win in a time of one minute 35.50 seconds. The front-running 11-2 bet Deardinner held on for second and the 27-1 outsider Matchbook got third.

Ziadie got his win Wednesday in the US$24,500 eighth race over 5-1/2 furlongs with the 3-1 second favourite Real Truth.

Manoel Cruz rode Real Truth to a front-running victory by three quarters of a length in 1:04.16.

Ziadie had topped the 2006-2007 Tropical Meet last January for his first South Florida title with 25 victories.

The son of Florida Hall of Fame trainer Ralph Ziadie also captured his first Calder Meet title in October with 53 winners to defeat O'Connell (40) and White (40).
