Creary among five Jamaicans in Windies squad
published: Friday | December 21, 2007

André Creary - File

NATIONAL CAPTAIN André Creary is among five Jamaicans included in the West Indies' 15-member squad for next year's ICC Youth World Cup in Malaysia.

Holmwood Technical's Creary, who led Jamaica to the one-day title and to second in the four-day version of the regional youth tournaments, will be joined in the squad by St. Elizabeth Technical's (STETHS) Jason Dawes, the most outstanding bowler in the three-day competition of the TCL Group West Indies Youth Challenge in St. Kitts and Nevis earlier this year.

Experienced players

Also included are Norman Manley's Horace Miller, the most outstanding batsman and Man of the Match in the final of the limited-overs competition, Nkrumah Bonner and Shacoya Thomas, both from Dinthill Technical.

Five players of first-class experience are also included in the squad. All-rounder Steve Jacobs, who is expected to lead the side with Barbadian Shamarh Brooks as his deputy, along with Adrian Barath, Darren Bravo and Veerasammy Permaul are the five players with first-class experience and the players of whom much is expected in the competition.

Also in the team is the left-handed opener Kieran Powell, who created a stir during last year's Stanford Twenty20 Cup in Antigua for his native Nevis.

The Youth World Cup opens on February 17 and the West Indies play their first match against South Africa on February 18 at the Kinrara Cricket Academy in Group B, which also includes India and Papua New Guinea.

Squad

West Indies squad: Adrian Barath, Nkrumah Bonner, Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, Kyle Corbin, Andre Creary, Jason Dawes, Dawnley Grant, Steve Jacobs, Delorn Johnson, Horace Miller, Veerasammy Permaul, Kieran Powell, Devon Thomas, Shacoya Thomas.
