Village keeper's fumble gives Tivoli 1-0 victory
published: Friday | December 21, 2007

Ainsley Walters, Freelance Writer

BEATEN FIRST-round finalists Tivoli Gardens had to depend on a slip-up by goalkeeper Sheldon Brown to notch a 1-0 home win over struggling Village United in their second-round opener of the Cash Plus Premier League on Wednesday.

Midfielder Jermaine Taylor netted a 25-yard shot, which Brown appeared to have covered but misread the pace of the ball, which fell just short of the 'keeper and spun into goal in the 60th minute.

Even though the victory kept Tivoli second in the standings on 18 points, still six behind first-round winners Portmore United, coach Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey said his team should have done far better against Village, who are yet to win a game this season.

"I was not there on Sunday for the first-round final but I listened on radio and this is what has been killing us, getting chances and not putting them away," said the Tivoli coach, who watched his team miss good chances just before and after the break. "We came away with three points today after the 'keeper slipped up," he pointed out.

Whereas Tivoli collected full points, Village are still hunting a victory with new coach, Paul 'Tegat' Davis.

"The team is picking up," he said, despite having to constantly shout what appeared to be prep school instructions from the sideline.

"Football now is a lot different from our time," said the former national striker. "We had ball-thinkers then. For us coaches, until we get a good team, doing the right things for us to sit back and enjoy the game, we have to be shouting," he added.
