Union, Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS impasse
published: Wednesday | December 19, 2007

The Union of Clerical Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) is again in conflict with the management of the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) over a planned redundancy exercise.

General secretary of UCASE, Senator Navel Clarke, in a press release yesterday, said it has come to his attention that some staff members have been served with termination notices under the guise of redundancy.

Senator Clarke claims that UCASE has not been contacted by the JPS management regarding the exercise, which takes effect on December 31.

However, Winsome Callum, head of communications at JPS, yesterday told The Gleaner that in all instances where workers have been made redundant, the union was informed.

"Recent changes in the materials management and financial controls departments resulted in the elimination of two positions. As there were no suitable positions elsewhere in the organisation to relocate the affected employees, they were separated from the company," said Ms. Callum.
