published: Friday | November 30, 2007

UNAIDS representative Miriam Maluwa hugs the young man who delivered a letter on behalf of the youngest child to be part of the campaign. - The letter asked Ms. Maluwa to say what UNAIDS was doing to ensure the Jamaican Government kept its promise to deal with stigma and discrimination in Jamaica.Contributed

Children living with HIV, supported by Panos and The Gleaner Company, will be delivering letters advocating for positive change on the issues they have identified to movers and shakers in Jamaica.

Dear Ms. Maluwa,

I am an eight-year-old boy living with HIV. I would like to bring to your attention some of the things that are happening to people living with HIV.

There is a great deal of discrimination taking place. I am even afraid to write you this note out of fear that someone will recognise me.

As a child living with HIV, I have had the opportunity to be living with a very good family that loves me. I attend a private school, but of course no one knows anything about me. This concerns me a lot as there is so much I could teach the students at my school.

My other concern is that people living with HIV are having difficulties getting some medication.

I would like to find out what UNAIDS is doing to make sure that Jamaica keeps its promise to make sure people living with HIV are not discriminated against. Also, what can UNAIDS do to make sure that people get all the medication they need and not just the antiretrovirals?
