The Editor, Sir:
Every time we are in full election mode, I'm alarmed at the number of persons who have no gainful employment and can therefore spend the day cavorting with their candidate of choice. Monday, November 19, local government nomination day, was no exception. I'm heartened by the fact that your writer Gareth Manning also commented on the prominence of children in Monday's activities. Don't these children have school to attend?
Too many idlers
There are far too many people sitting around idle in this country, hence the high crime rate. The adage still holds true: "The devil finds work for idle hands." They have nothing to do, so they can spend all the time in the world blocking roads, congregating at murder scenes, and going to Early Mondayz on Hagley Park Road which creates traffic congestion every Tuesday morning at 6:00 a.m.
One of your front-page articles today spoke to a 9:30 p.m. curfew for children. I commend the imposition of a curfew, but think it should be even earlier, like 8:00 p.m. There is absolutely no need for children to be on the street any later than that. This country needs a complete overhaul where productivity and work ethic are concerned, and the political leaders must set the pace. Stop bussing people in for political activities, it is counterproductive.
I am, etc.,
KAREN HENRY
