Mayor in the dark
published: Friday | November 23, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Regarding the sexual assaults which took place in the St. William Grant Park, Mayor McKenzie was reported as saying: "No, honestly, I was not aware of it. I will have to check it tomorrow (today) and ask the city engineer to find out exactly why there are no lights in the park."

This is unacceptable coming from the mayor. This shows complete disregard for the sentimentality of the park, and a total disregard for the safety of the public.

It should be the responsibility of the mayor to appoint individuals whose assignments should include maintenance checks of public places at least once a month.

It should not have to be brought to his attention after a number of women have been violated and others robbed. There should also be security patrols set up for national parks.

I am, etc.,
