Cabinet mum on Vasciannie
published: Thursday | November 22, 2007

The Cabinet is yet to discuss the controversy surrounding the recommendation by the Public Services Commission (PSC) to appoint Professor Stephen Vasciannie as the country's next Solicitor General.

Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sport, Olivia Grange, told reporters at yesterday's post- Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House that the Cabinet had not set a date to discuss the issue.

She said the matter was not on the agenda for discussion at Tuesday's Cabinet meeting.

Debate on the appointment of a Solicitor General intensified late last week after news surfaced that Prime Minister Bruce Golding had asked the members of the PSC to resign on the grounds of misconduct.

The Prime Minister had reportedly warned that if the members of the PSC failed to step down, he would advise the Governor-General to dissolve the PSC.

The Government had objected to the recommendation to appoint Vasciannie, but the PSC said it would not reverse its position.
