Hey Train to run away with Cup
published: Wednesday | November 21, 2007

AITCHEMESBEAGLE, with Dane Nelson aboard, gets by HEY TRAIN (Larris Allen) to win the eighth race for native-bred four-year-olds and up (non-winners of three o/t) over 2000 metres at Caymanas Park in September. MIDWEEK RACING resumes at Caymanas Park today following a two-week break with two trophy races gracing the nine-race programme.

These are the three-year-old and up restricted-allowance II for the Flossie McNeil Memorial Cup over 1200 metres (non-winners of two for fillies and mares) and the restricted-allowance III for the Glen T. Williamson Cup (non-winners of three) for four-year-olds and up to be contested by 10 starters.

Among the starters for the Williamson Cup are last year's Derby winner RANSOM MAN, HEY TRAIN, NAVAJOJOE, NAHIMA and SPECIAL CAT, the group from which the winner should emerge.

Of the others, the recent winners ROYAL MAJESTY and BORN FIGHTER are both enjoying good form and while I expected them to figure prominently, especially the front-running ROYAL MAJESTY, I fear they will fall victim to one of the proven distance horses, namely RANSOM MAN, HEY TRAIN or NAVAJOJOE, the mount of leading jockey Omar Walker.

Preference is for the Vin Edwards-trained HEY TRAIN on the strength of his close second to out-of-class AITCHEMESBEAGLE over the distance on September 15 carrying a similar weight.

Better off at the weights

HEY TRAIN had NAVAJOJOE 3 1/4 lengths behind in third that day, and now better off at the weights should not only confirm his superiority over the consistent six-year-old gelding, but beat the others as well.

HEY TRAIN has caught the eye at exercise in preparation for this trophy and is weighted to hold RANSOM MAN and NAVAJOJOE at bay in the closing exchanges.

The Flossie McNeil Memorial Cup has also attracted 10 starters and indications are that victory will go to the recent course winner POWERFUL PROSPECT, who seems at a stage of rapid improvement.

Made all

Trained by Patrick Lynch, the three-year-old filly by Snowrico out of the Schism mare Powerful Device, came into her own on November 10 in a maiden race when making all, scoring by 3 1/4 lengths from JACK N' DBOX and MOUNT DIABLO, covering the distance in the fairly good time of 1:14.2.

Although this represents a tougher assignment, especially with the likes of THANKSWITHASMILE, PAGEE PRINCESS and consistent RIGGED TO WIN present, PROSPECT PRINCESS under four-time champion Charles Hussey is fancied to repeat.

Her main danger must surely be the stretch-running RIGGED TO WIN. A model of consistency, the bay filly from the stables of champion trainer Wayne DaCosta notched her only win over 1300 metres on July 25, and this being her easiest task since should ensure that PROSPECT PRINCESS in fully extended at the finish.

Other firm fancies on the card are JACK B DBOX to lead home MOUNT DIABLO in the second, the speedy MILLIONDOLLARBABY to rebound at the expense of COCK ROBIN in the fourth, COLUMBUS with Hussey up in the seventh and FREE FALL, now dropped in class, to win the open- allowance straight five race.
