JAMAICA'S REGGAE Boyz will hope to continue rocking to the international football revival beat when they face Guatemala at the National Stadium at 7:00 this evening for their second friendly in a week.
It was a triumphant return to the international friendly stage for the Jamaican national team as they trounced El Salvador 3-0 in their first game in nearly five months on Sunday.
However, it will be a moderatel line-up that goes out to face the Guatemalans tonight. Captain of the squad, Ricardo Gardner, left the island yesterday to rejoin his English Premiership club Bolton Wanderers.
Gardner, who netted twice in Sunday's game, will also be joined on the plane back home by industrious midfielder Jamal Campbell-Ryce (Barnsley), Jermaine Johnson (Sheffield Wednesday) and defender Damion Stewart (Queens Park Rangers).
With all four of those players an integral part of Jamaica's starting line-up on Sunday, interim coach Theodore Whitmore will have to make some adjustments ahead of tonight's game.
The squad should, however, be bolstered by the arrival of first-string goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, who has struggled for form in recent times at Bradford City. Winger Omar Daley and Tranmere's Ian Goodison have also joined the team.
The 35-year-old Goodison, a member of the successful 1998 World Cup qualification team, has been recalled to the squad after a successful stint with the English League One team.
The Jamaicans, despite the missing players, should still be able to muster plenty of fire power up front with the dangerous pairing of Luton Shelton and Ricardo Fuller looking to make amends for a couple of missed opportunities in the first fixture.
Fresh off a 1-0 loss to Honduras on Saturday, Guatemala, who placed third at this year's Gold Cup, should pose more of a challenge for Reggae Boyz as they boast seven regular starters.
Guatemala's top striker, Carlos Ruis, is recovering from knee surgery and forward Mario Rodriguez, who recently has a fractured cheekbone will be notable absentees from the 22-man squad.
The team will also be without talented young winger Marvin Avila and Jose Contreras who are taking part in the country's Under-23 fixtures.
Defensively, the team will also be missing the services of centre half Pablo Melgar and Henry Medina. Noted for their discipline, the Guatemalan team is expected to be a tough one to breach.
