Sources of crime
published: Wednesday | November 21, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Although it is business as usual for many of our citizens it should be a sad moment in our history knowing that, since the start of the year 15 law enforcement officers along with over 1,000 citizens have been murdered.

Witnessing their death

As a former Jamaica Constabulary Force officer, and a U.S. army veteran, it is very difficult to witness one of your comrades being killed by armed thugs. As a society, we have a far way to go. Some of the root causes of crime and violence have been identified. Murders and other heinous crimes occur mainly as a result of the awful social conditions that exist in our society. Coupled with poverty, lack of employment and the reckless parenting to which many youths are exposed are other major factors.

A significant reduction in crime cannot be accomplished until the common causes are removed, and other productive measures are put in place. As a result of the present 'social turmoil', and economic conditions, our culture is changing drastically, and we are fast becoming a violent society. For example, a journalist/photographer covering the nomination day proceedings was attacked in the lawful execution of his duties. We need to re-examine our culture - the way we do things.

Disciplined societies triumph in a number of positive ways. So why can't we?

I am, etc.,
