Independent turns heads
published: Tuesday | November 20, 2007

Analee Bernard, Gleaner Writer

Black River, St. Elizabeth:

The biggest crowd support for any independent candidate came as a surprise in South East St. Elizabeth on nomination day, when sitting councillor for the Myersville division, Winston Sinclair, matched the support meted out to the more traditional players.

Sinclair has been the sitting councillor representing the People's National Party (PNP) for nine years.

Tremendous support

In an interview with The Gleaner, Sinclair said he has tremendous support from both PNP and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) supporters.

He is of the view that he can bring back peace to that division as the "Portia, Peter factors are still haunting the area."

He continued by saying he has done it before and he can continue doing it.

The South Eastern constituency has four divisions, namely, Myersville, Junction, Southfield and Malvern.

The JLP dominated the council by a nine to six majority in the 2003 parish council election.

No incidents

The PNP candidates along with their caretaker, Norman Horne, came in at 10:00 a.m. They are Richard Parchment, Myersville division; Jassette Schafer, Junction division; Barbara Gayle, Southfield division; and Victor Stewart, Malvern division.

The JLP candidates along with Member of Parliament, Franklyn Witter, came in at 11:55 a.m. They are Ervin Bellonfante, Myersville division; Shirley Myers, Southfield division; Cetany Holness, Junction division, and Donald Simpson, Malvern division. There were no reports of any incidents during the day.
