SPALDINGS, Clarendon:
Nomination day for the December 5 local government poll in North West Clarendon, as was expected, lacked the fanfare which was associated with the September 3 general election.
Although some supporters of both major political parties were out in their traditional party colours, it was the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), who turned the event into a festive occasion.
Loud music
Speaker boxes blared loud music at the JLP constituency office in the town of Frankfield from minutes to 9 o'clock, as Michael Stern, sitting Member of Parliament, and his four candidates awaited their 10:00 a.m. appointment at the nearby electoral office in that town.
Those who were nominated included incumbent councillor Kaleb Lewinson; schoolteacher, Kenrick Dunkley; newcomers, Clinton Marshall (farmer) and Leighton Salmon (accountant), who will contest the Spaldings and Ritches divisions, respectively.
Replacement
In the meantime, the People's National Party candidates, headed by former Member of Parliament Richard Azan, handed in their nomination papers and paid their required fees.
Azan will be contesting the Spaldings division. He has replaced the late Jean White who passed away on September 12 following a brief illness.
Other candidates, who were nominated included schoolteacher, Elvris Marshall, incumbent councillor in the Ritches division, and businessman Kevin Shirley.
