WESTERN BUREAU:
CHAMPIONS GLENMUIR and Ben Francis Cup Knockout winners Garvey Maceo will be among the first-round winners seeking to consolidate their positions atop their respective groups when action resumes in the inter-zone round of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup this afternoon.
Glenmuir, who registered the biggest margin of victory in the first round - a 9-0 thrashing of Annotto Bay - will take on first-round losers Dinthill in a Group Six game at the Spanish Town Prison Oval. A win for Glenmuir would put them within a point of booking a quarter-final place and effectively end their opponents' campaign.
Garvey Maceo, first-round 5-0 winners against Brimmervale and the team fancied by the pundits to dethrone Glenmuir, will battle Group Five counterparts Glengoffe, who drew their first-round game 0-0, in the opening game of a Jamalco doubleheader.
"The players are extremely confident," said Garvey Maceo's coach, Jeffrey Hewitt, following Saturday's victory against Brimmervale. "Our aim is to get a positive result from every game we play and the players are committed to doing just that."
Second inner-zone win
The Hopeton Gilchrist-coached Munro College, 1-0 first-round winners against Spalding, will also be gunning for their second inner-zone win this afternoon when they battle Bellefield in a top-of-the-table Group Three clash, the feature game of a St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) doubleheader. Bellefield clipped Lennon 3-2 in the first round.
The other first-round winners who will be eyeing a second win are Manchester High School, who stunned Clarendon College 1-0 and surprise team Fair Prospect, who clipped Dinthill 1-0. Manchester High will oppose Group Four counterparts STETHS, who drew 0-0 with Holmwood in the first round while Fair Prospect will battle Annotto Bay in a Group Six game.
Among the fancied teams battling to stay in contention are former champions Cornwall College, Frome Technical and Rusea's, who all came away with draws from their first-round fixtures. Cornwall College drew 2-2 with Grange Hill, Frome ended 0-0 with Ocho Rios and Rusea's battled to a 3-3 draw with Cedric Titus. Come this afternoon, Cornwall College will be up against Ocho Rios in their Group One game at Drax Hall, Frome Technical will battle Grange Hill in a Group One Westmoreland derby at STETHS, while Rusea's will meet Petersfield in their Group Two match-up at Jarrett Park.
"We have been playing well but we have been missing far too many chances at one end and giving up soft goals at the other," said Rusea's coach Anthony 'Follies' Williams. "We will be looking to get it right this afternoon."
