Something's wrong with the picture
published: Wednesday | November 14, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

In the matter of the Cuban light bulb issue I cannot believe that the Opposition sees nothing wrong with issuing a contract to contractors not on the National Contracts Commission list. By golly, the companies were established three days prior to the contract being awarded. For each Cuban that was on the project there were four Jamaicans. Is there nothing wrong with that picture?

I know for a fact (my household received bulbs) that the Jamaicans who escorted the Cubans in certain sections of Kingston (presumably employed by either or both of the companies in question) were employed to a constituency office. Certain households in a housing scheme received boxes of bulbs and this was without returning any incandescent bulb.

Responsibility

If we, as taxpayers, continue to let actions as these slide, then we need not speak when the costs are passed on to us. Why won't the persons who were elected to represent us do so with a sense of responsibility? When Jamaica is run into the ground what happens to our children? I truly believe that they are/were the future.

Last month was Heritage Month and tributes were paid to our heroes. Both the present administration and the opposition need to revisit the legacy of these men and woman. Do not let their achievements be in vain. Stop protecting those who seek to bring our wonderful island down.

I am calling on all those in representational politics to be responsible and own up to your actions, be it successful or not. Have a little faith in the persons who elected you to represent them. One thing I am sure about Jamaicans - they are quite forgiving. So remember, the truth shall set you free.

I am, etc.,

SUZETTE THOMPSON
