Menudo, a Superstakes legend
published: Saturday | November 10, 2007

DID YOU know that MENUDO holds the unique distinction of having won the Superstakes on four consecutive occasions?

Owned and trained by Richard Azan, MENUDO captured the prestigious mile and quarter race for the first time as a three-year-old in 1999 with Panamanian jockey Roger Moore in the saddle and duly followed up in 2000, 2001 and 2002 with former champion Andrew Ramgeet riding on all three occasions.

MENUDO made an unsuccessful attempt to win the race for a fifth time in 2003, but could only manage fourth to the three-year-old colt PITTACUS.

Campaigning at the then advanced age of seven, MENUDO finished lame and had to be dismounted by Ramgeet on his way back.

He was retired immediately, this after an outstanding racing career which saw him win 18 races from 46 starts and a record $13.5 million in stakes, which was surpassed by I'MSATISFIED in 2004.

From humble beginnings, the illustrious campaigner made an indelible mark on the Superstakes and his name will always be synonymous with the race.

For his great achievement, MENUDO, a chestnut horse by The Medic out of Making Peace, bred by Owen Palmer, was voted 'Horse of the Year' in 2000 and again in 2001.
