Court grants sharpshooter right to qualify in event
published: Saturday | November 10, 2007

The Jamaica Rifle Association (JRA) has been barred by a Supreme Court order from preventing Orville Henriques, a licensed firearm holder and sharpshooter, from participating in a qualifying match today.

Justice Donald McIntosh said that if the JRA did not obey the order then it cannot host the qualifying match today.

The match is being held for persons to qualify to participate in an international match, which is to take place overseas in January next year.

injunction granted

The judge granted the ex parte injunction after hearing submissions from attorneys-at-law Jacqueline Wilcott and Franklin Hallburton, instructed by the law firm Knight, Junor and Samuels.

The lawyers said Henriques received an email informing him of the qualifying match. They said when he went to pay the registration fee at the JRA he was told he was not a member of the JRA and could not be registered to participate in the match.

The injunction expires on November 15 and both parties can return to court on that date.
