
GayleKavan Gayle, assistant general secretary of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), is to be unanimously endorsed today as the new president of the BITU.
Mr. Gayle is to take over the top job from Rudyard Spencer who has taken up the post as Minister of Health and the Environment in the Bruce Golding-led Cabinet.
Some 500 delegates are expected to attend the union's triennial general assembly to elect the new president and vice-presidents.
Yesterday, Gayle told The Gleaner that he was looking forward to the challenge.
"It is a good feeling, there are going to be challenges but we will have to deal with the challenges," he said. "My effort will be one based on a team effort and the intent is really to continue to build the union."
youngest ever
The 39-year-old Gayle will create history as he will be the youngest to be elected as president of the 69-year-old union.
Gayle joined the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union on March 11, 1986. Since then he has served and held positions of senior negotiating officer, assistant island supervisor and his current position of assistant general secretary which was attained three years ago.
Meanwhile, Wesley Nelson will be endorsed as senior vice president while, Alvin Sinclair and Alden Brown will be elected as vice presidents.
Other members to be elected are: George Fyffe, as general secretary and Clayson Panton as assistant general secretary.
The conference is scheduled to get underway at 10:00 a.m. at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston. Prime Minister Bruce Golding is the guest speaker.
