Bridgeport strike twice against XLCR
published: Wednesday | October 31, 2007

Keisha Hill, Staff Reporter

IT WAS a battle for supremacy between Bridgeport and Excelsior High's senior and junior netball teams in the Inter-Secondary Schools Association/Digicel competition played at Excelsior on Monday.

In the junior competition, Bridgeport beat Excelsior 16-11. Bridgeport's goal shooter, Trudiann Pennant, propelled her team to victory with 12 of the points.

In the first-half, Excelsior got off to a good start, but were unable to keep up the momentum. Bridgeport overpowered them and began dominating the match in the dying minutes of the half to finish with an 8-6 lead.

Bridgeport kept their momentum into the second-half even though Excelsior fought hard to maintain their position. Excelsior's goal attack, Ashley Ellington, was in impressive form as she led her team with seven goals. However, Excelsior were no match for the Bridgeport team and went down by five points.

In the senior competition, Bridgeport dismissed Excelsior by a similar margin. Excelsior seemed set to avenge the junior team's defeat in the first quarter with a 5-5 scoreline. However, Bridgeport took charge in the second quarter and held a 13-8 lead going into the break. At the end of the third quarter, Excelsior were down 19-11 and, despite a game final-quarter fightback were unable to haul in Bridgeport, who won 24-18.

Scoring tally

Excelsior's goal attack, Tabitha Nelson, scored 17 goals for her team, while Bridgeport's goal shooter, Monique Espeut, had 20 of her team's 23.

Amyrel Pottinger, physical education teacher for the Bridge-port team, was relatively pleased with her side's performance.

"We started out a little timid, but we got into our game and produced the desired result. The senior team needed to win for a chance to qualify to the second round. We are confident that we will be successful," Pottinger said.
