NOTE-WORTHY: Helping deportees
published: Wednesday | October 31, 2007

Helping deportees

As far back as 2002, the United States made it clear that it had no mandated funds or interest in helping to resettle criminal deportees -but offered to help with a monitoring system.

For sure, a receiving country like Jamaica has to bear its own burden by accepting its own nationals, once identity has been ascertained.

But, a provision should be in place for them (deportees) to secure their 'material possessions'. This can help to alleviate the suffering of many.

Flat Bridge solution

The Flat Bridge situation is a no brainer. The river has everything one needs to correct the problem.

Just lower the river and use the rock and sand to correct the problem; or change the road and use the tunnel. There are many options that are no brainers.

Creationism only

Should creationism be taught alongside Darwin's Theory of Evolution in our schools?

It is my view that creationism should be solely taught in our schools. This position stems from two main facts, one the evolution theory lacks concrete scientific evidence and it has been the basis for discriminatory actions and racism meted out to human beings.

The likes of Adolf Hitler have used the theory of evolution as their basis for discriminatory actions against those of African and Jewish descent.

These people have used the evolution theory as a cornerstone to build their arguments and justify their bigoted actions. The teaching of the theory of evolution sets a dangerous precedent overtly and subliminally.

Portray positives

I'm a contract teacher working in one of the U.S. territories. It's interesting to note how Jamaicans are perceived by other nations. One of my co-workers is fascinated with the idea of visiting Jamaica and, of course, I'm encouraging her to do so

But her husband is adamant that he will not come because of the high level of crime and violence. He told her that he has Jamaican friends who are afraid to come home much less he.

It would be nice if more of our positives are portrayed than the negatives. Let's showcase beautiful Jamaica, instead of highlighting how many are killed on a daily basis.
