'Defend yuh turf'
published: Saturday | October 27, 2007

The Jamaica Boxing Board of Control will host Caribbean rivals Trinidad and Tobago in the second leg of a boxing bout dubbed 'Defend yu Turf', from November 22-25 in Kingston.

The event will be held in honour of the late Fitzroy Giuseppe, a Trinidadian who boxed for the twin-island republic, but made Jamaica his home, eventually becoming national coach.

Giuseppe died some years ago while working at a boxing card at Ken's Wildflower in Portmore. His body was returned to his land of birth for final resting.

The idea of honouring his name with a reciprocal tour came about while Kingsley Goodison was in Australia as manager of Jamaica's team to the Commonwealth Games last year.

There he and members of the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board struck a deal for the event.

The first staging happened in May '07 when Jamaica's boxers went to Trinidad for the Pan American qualifiers.

The Jamaican boxers bedazzled the Trinidad audience, winning three of four fights and the excitement that was generated was such that the Trinidadians are eagerly and anxiously waiting their turn to travel.

They will be taking a 10-member team that includes one female, to take on the best that Jamaica has to offer, and have threatened badly beat the Jamaicans.
