Sporting Central, Waterhouse end 1-1
published: Thursday | October 25, 2007

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

Spanish Town:

SPORTING CENTRAL Academy played to an exciting 1-1 draw with former Premier League champions Waterhouse at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

The match, played before a packed venue, saw the teams involved in a ding-dong battle until the 69th minute when Jomo Gordon scored for Waterhouse to lead 1-0 until the first minute of extra time when the leading goalscorer in the Premier League, Oneke Ford, struck to make it 1-1.

The match was a well-contested affair with the likes of Jonathan Williams, Garfield Reid and Damion Williams standing out for Waterhouse. The latter had the Sporting Central defence under constant pressure with skilful dribbles on the wing and it was only due to faulty finishing that they did not score more. Kevin Williams of Sporting Central said his team showed character.

"We are here to stay in the Premier League and with 90 minutes of play already gone, we still had the character to score and that shows that we belong in the league," Williams said.

Waterhouse coach Banito Barriga said his team did not play out the full game and they scored, they failed to capitalise on several opportunities.

"We did not take them as a tough team and we scored but did not play through to the end and that is why we lost points," Barriga said. "Overall, we did not play badly, however, and will go back to the drawing board."
