Smith to comment on Woolmer report soon
published: Wednesday | October 24, 2007

Minister of National Security, Derrick Smith says he will make a formal statement soon on Justice Ian Forte's review of investigations into the death of Pakistan cricket coach, Bob Woolmer.

Justice Forte submitted the report to the Ministry in early September.

"I would think in another 10 days (I would make a comment). I now have it on my desk and am going through it," Mr. Smith told The Gleaner last Friday at a Jamaica Constabulary Force press briefing that was held at the Ministry's office on Oxford Road in St. Andrew.

"What I have been reading is what I have read before," the Security Minister said.

Mr. Smith added: "The basic sequence of events, having found the body and what actions have been taken. I have not yet been at the point in the report where I would want to highlight areas of significance."

Justice Forte, a former High Court judge, headed a commission that was mandated by former National Security Minister Dr. Peter Phillips to review the Woolmer case and give a report as to what went wrong during the police investigation.

Justice Forte submitted the report to the ministry in September after initially missing the July 31 deadline. A coroner's inquest into the cricket coach's death, on March 18 at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, is currently underway at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston since it started last Tuesday.
