Japanese engineers to tweak JPS operations
published: Wednesday | October 24, 2007

A team of senior engineers from Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) is currently being hosted by the Jamaica Public Service Company Ltd. (JPS) as part of a partnership arrangement between TEPCO and Marubeni, the new majority owners of the JPS.

According to a release from JPS, Marubeni has engaged TEPCO to provide technical assistance to the local light and power company, as well as to its other recently acquired Caribbean utility companies. This technical assistance will be primarily in the transmission and distribution areas of the companies' operations.

Damian Obiglio, JPS president and chief executive officer, is confident that the partnership with TEPCO will ultimately result in the strengthening of JPS's operations and the delivery of better service to customers.

TEPCO in over 20 countries

"TEPCO already operates in over 20 countries across the globe, and has significant expertise in transmission and distribution operations," Mr. Obiglio said. "This will definitely benefit us as we work to improve the reliability of our power delivery network."

TEPCO is one of the largest power companies in the world, with 27.8 million customers, close to 62,000 megawatts of generating capacity, and over one million kilometres of distribution lines in its operations worldwide.
