William Knibb reunion this weekend
published: Friday | October 19, 2007

Washington, D.C.:

The William Knibb Memorial High School Alumni South Florida Chapter will stage its annual reunion weekend from today, October 19 to Sunday, October 21, with several activities in the South Florida area.

The weekend will bring together past students from as far away as Jamaica, the United Kingdom, Canada and various states throughout the United States. The weekend activities will kick-off with a welcome party at the residence of past student, Patricia Robinson, followed by a welcome breakfast at the home of Madge Johnson tomorrow.

According to the president of the South Florida Chapter, Trevor Dale, "The William Knibb Memorial High School Alumni reunion has become an annual event, whereby, past students and friends of Trelawny get together to support the institution that has greatly assisted them in moving forward in their lives." Mr. Dale pointed out that the main highlight of the weekend will be the staging of the annual fund-raising dinner and dance tomorrow, which will be held at the Best Western Hotel, Plantation in Fort Lauderdale beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Guest speaker

The guest speaker at the dinner will be attorney-at-law, Philmore Scott, past student of William Knibb Memorial High School. Dania Wynter, principal of the institution will give an update on the performance of the school. Attendees will dance to the music of Sly, Slick and Wicked Disco.

President Dale said proceeds from this year's dinner will go towards expanding the school's computer lab. Over the past three years, the South Florida Chapter has contributed more than US$6,000 to the school. On Sunday, members will attend the annual picnic at the Markham Park, followed by the annual general meeting where new officers will be elected.

The William Knibb High School which is named after the renowned baptist emancipator, the Rev. William Knibb, was founded by the Rev. Stephen James, former pastor of the Duncan's Baptist Church, 46 years ago, when the parish of Trelawny had only one high school.
