The Editor, Sir:
With the continuous increase in oil prices and Jamaica's ever increasing oil bill, isn't it time the Government look at ways to reduce oil consumption. Motor vehicle consumption contributes significantly to this high oil cost, but with the emergence of the hybrid car, I have yet to see that coming to Jamaica (Normally Jamaica is not too far behind with the use of the latest technological advancement).
Even though the current duties on hybrid cars is 63 per cent, I think it should be lowered further where the cost can be more attractive. The cost for hybrid cars is generally more than the equivalent gas version, however, immense savings can be made on fuel consumption, and there is the great environmental benefits to be had (and if the trading in carbon credits for country is to come on board, even more economic opportunity).
The majority of our travels are done in the city, which based on our traffic levels and the workings of the hybrid car this would indicate that the car would operate significantly on electric power, leading to large savings.
Implementing policies to promote such technology would greatly benefit the country, as there will be reduced pressure on the exchange rate and financial resources; not to mention the benefits to the environment.
I am, etc.,
