The Editor, Sir:My day was made when I saw the front page story, 'Boys bounce back', of The Gleaner this morning, October 18. I congratulate the boys, parents and staff of KC for lifting the heads of all those boys in our country who were discouraged by the overarching negative views of the men in our society.
I congratulate Kingston College for lifting the heads of those parents who thought that it could not be done, and resigned themselves to an outcome that was predestined for one of failure and hopelessness.
I congratulate KC boys for opening the eyes of all those boys like themselves, who thought that mediocrity was the norm and anything more was extraordinary, even impossible.
Hardship
As the article pointed out, many of those boys came from inner-city communities and their success proves that good can come from hardship, and that you can be in the world but not of the world. I congratulate the teachers who may have put more of themselves into the lives of their students than they did into their own.
Kingston College, keep up the excellent work. You have put a dent into the myth that our boys are underachievers. As a former St. Hugh's girl (the sister school) I am extremely proud. Other school administrators, particularly those who cater to boys, now need to examine the KC model, see what it is that they are doing, as clearly, they are doing something right, and use those examples to improve your own school so that your students too can experience the thrill of academic victory.
To the Gleaner Company: Thank you for giving us a wonderful start to the day!
I am, etc.,
