Four government ministers are in the United States this week on official business. They are Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Dr. Kenneth Baugh; Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Audley Shaw; Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance, Don Wehby, and Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett.
Dr. Baugh is in New Jersey and will deliver the keynote address at a one-day conference aimed at showcasing the range of trade and investment opportunities in Jamaica. The conference will be held at the Hilton Hasbrouc and Executive Meeting Center in New Jersey, today.
The event, themed 'Beautiful Beaches, Bountiful Business' is being organised by the Jamaica Diaspora Trade and Investment Council Northeast Region, United States. Fifteen Jamaican and United States-based companies in the areas of construction, renewable energy, agriculture, information technology, finance, manufacturing, export, health and wellness tourism are expected to participate in the investment conference and trade exposition.
Messrs. Shaw and Wehbyarrived in Washington, D.C., yesterday evening for a high-level business visit.
The two ministers will have meetings with a number of top officials at the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Today, Mr. Shaw will address members of the Jamaican community in Washington, D.C., at a 'Meet the Ministers' session hosted by the Embassy of Jamaica, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The minister will give an update on economic growth and the development of Jamaica in the 21st century.
Plan for tourism
For his part, Mr. Bartlett, arrived in the U.S. earlier this week and delivered the keynote address at a luncheon meeting of the Jamaican American Chamber of Commerce in Manhattan, New York, on Tuesday. While in New York, Mr. Bartlett unveiled a three-year master plan for sustainable tourism development in Jamaica, which will entail aggressive marketing, and investment and product development strategies to increase visitor arrivals and revenue to the industry.
Mr. Bartlett, who is scheduled to return to Jamaica today, was accompanied by Basil Smith, the director of tourism and Carole Guntley, director general in the Tourism Ministry.
