NOTE-WORTHY: Youth spark
published: Friday | October 19, 2007

Youth spark

It is with great pleasure that we read the story "Youth picture sparks change" in Thursday's Gleaner. It is proof that our smallest actions can bring great change.

It is proof that we have sensitive, wonderful young people in our midst, with an open heart to feel, and eyes to see what happens around them. It is proof that good education and extracurricular activities open our children's minds. It is proof that good parenting creates great kids. Well done, Tristan.

We are proud of you, and the more as your mommy, Kim, is one of us.

No land phones

This is a 'wake-up' call for Cable & Wireless. Since August 19, there has been no C&W land phone service in the Eastern St. Thomas area due to the Hurricane Dean.

Customers are receiving bills with call charges, and rental fee. My great concerns are: (1) How C&W arrived at those charges when the service was down? (2) It is not fair for customers to pay for what they haven't received. I am also concerned about the way some C&W employees have behaved whilst receiving reports from customers.

Why there is no office for complaints in St. Thomas? When will the people get the services in their homes and offices?

Bus service

I am asking the Minister of Transport to look deeply on the transportation system particularly the #46 bus route.

In the evenings at Half-Way Tree you can get no #46 on Saturdays and Sundays; it's like days off. It is frustrating to stand in Half-Way Tree for two hours without getting a #46 to go home. When the express comes at 6:00 o clock it changes route to #32, which have so many buses on that route. Help! help! help!

End shift system

This shift system in schools is not working as it should, as teachers are overworked in trying to deliver quality education using a curriculum which is designed for children in a whole day school setting. Indiscipline has evolved over time because of the ineffectiveness of the shift system as the children are left unsupervised, after or before they attend school for the day. I think there should be a national debate about the issue of the shift system. I'm sure that most stakeholders will agree that it is not working and should call for its immediate elimination.
