The Editor, Sir:
We are now in the process of celebrating our heritage but I am left to wonder if Jamaicans are really serious about protection. We do not seem to realise that without a past we have no future and this leads to the question what is the legacy we are leaving for the next generation.
It would seem that the aim of this generation is to destroy, destroy, destroy. John Maxwell has been preaching at us forever to get us to realise that if we do not protect this God-given heritage we are literally destroying it for the next generation.
Word of mouth is not enough, action is required. While I am writing, what springs to my mind immediately is the state of the Ward Theatre. Why are we allowing this structure to deteriorate? Do we not remember the joy of going to see plays and especially the Pantomime at this site.
Why are we not doing something about Spanish Town square, which I think could be a world heritage site, if we only take care of it?
Where is our pride? We are talking about building a new Parliament, have we ensured that the old Headquarters House is restored and put in place funds to keep it always in good order. Are we paying attention to the homes of all our National Heroes?
I am, etc.,
