Why don't we till the soil?
published: Wednesday | October 17, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am tired of reading about food prices going up and the government cannot do anything about it. When are we going to decide that we must manufacture sugar for our own consumption instead of waiting in line to satisfy those in whatever union they fall.

When are we going to get the idle lands countrywide under some serious cultivating of corn? Yes, I am aware of the fact that we would still have to import some things, but for heavens' sake import some and not all.

There are enough idle hands that can work if given strict instructions and solid supervision. It is amazing how visionless these doctored persons are . Are there any plans to revive that vast orange orchard in the west? Jamaica has many great persons who are more than willing to carry the load as long as there will be prosperity.

The Minister of Agriculture needs to put things in perspective. How hard is it to get feasibility done with regards to the amount of available land than can be used to plant corn that would be able to help the cattle farmers ? It is time we get serious or the majority in my beautiful island home will starve to death. Food price gaan up ah salary a di same. Wah sence dat mek ?

I am, etc.,
