McCreath hits late winner
published: Monday | October 15, 2007

Keisha Hill, Staff Reporter

August Town F.C. registered a close, 1-0 victory over St. Georges in an aggressively contested match in the Cash Plus Premier League, at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Bowl yesterday.

The keenly contested match enveloped a steady and consistent pace as both teams were at the get-go from the blow of the referee's whistle at the start.

In the first half the strikers kept goalkeeper Anthoneil Williams and Devon Haughton on their toes with frequent attempts to score.

Goals were also made even more difficult as the midfield was closely guarded, with fierce tackling and defending by both sides.

Failed to register

With the balls sailing high and wide both sides failed to register a goal with the half ending 0-0.

The goalless trend continued well into the second half until Nicholas McCreath gave August Town the lead in the 83rd minute, in somewhat the manner of an opportunistic striker when he hit home from a melee at goalmouth.

In an attempt to equalise the score, Omar Brisset of St. Georges fueled a powerful free kick with four minutes to go in the second half. However, the effort was deemed not to have crossed the line after it was spilled by the August Town goalkeeper.

Despite the loss, coach of the promoted St. Georges team, Donovan Duckie, was pleased with his team's performance.

Tough game

"It was a hard fought game. The guys did well. The conditions were not favourable in terms of the size of the field. We were exposed a little bit with this sized field but we missed our chances and the other team capitalised," he said.

Coach of the winning team, Calvert Fitzgerald, said his team scored in the nick of time.

"It is a deserved victory. St. Georges came and they really played a good game of excellent football. We created a few more opportunities than they did and were successful," he said.

He added: "We are improving each game. We were out a couple players this week, but we did not concede. We consider the outcome today good."

Victory lifted August Town to four points, the same as St. Georges. August Town will travel to Village United next Sunday, while St. Georges will host Seba at Lynch Park in Portland.
