STRIKER Kevin 'Pele' Wilson missed a 48th minute penalty, which could have been Arnett Gardens' first Premier League goal this season, resulting in a 0-0 draw against arch-rivals Waterhouse at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.
The result pushed Arnett further down the 12-team standings of the Cash Plus Premier League on three points.
Waterhouse moved to four points on an afternoon when the lead changed hands in the league, as Tivoli Gardens and Harbour View emerged from mid-table to race to five points following losses by Seba United and St. George's Sports Club.
Failed attempt
Wilson created the spot kick but failed to convert after being psyched by goalkeeper Richard McCallum, who used the oldest trick in the goalie manual to have the Arnett striker show his hand.
Attempting a spectacular overhead kick with Marco McDonald stuck to him in the penalty box, Wilson got off the shot but the ball hit the Waterhouse defender's hands, which were held up high, declaring innocence as the Arnett striker fell to the ground.
Wilson, who hardly misses a penalty, stepped up to bury his shot but McCallum rocked to his left on his line and the Arnett striker gobbled the bait by shooting to the Waterhouse keeper's right, which he was fully prepared for and had little trouble in making a diving save.
Arnett Gardens were far more attacking and created better chances than Waterhouse and should have led as early as the 13th minute when Horace Sharpe met Gerald Neil's square from the right at the far post.
However, the Arnett striker headed directly to McCallum at the post and the Waterhouse goalie gladly tipped the ball for a corner.
Waterhouse's best chance of the match came in the 32nd minute when Michael Stone got a similar far post chance after a corner was headed on across the six-yard box, but the defender sent his header wide of the mark.
Arnett Gardens coach, Max Straw, said his team had only itself to blame for not snatching three points from a game in which they had superior possession, as Leon Strickland could not be contained by the Waterhouse defence.
"A penalty is a lottery we should have probably scored," he said. "In the first half, we took away the offensive threat from Waterhouse. I didn't expect this match to be won by more than one goal and we got the penalty in the second half," he pointed out.
Waterhouse's Danilo Barriga admitted his team was not fluent in midfield.
"We made a lot of mistakes in midfield," he said. "We had some creation problems but I'm new to the team and Waterhouse are getting better," he added.
