Kemoy Campbell of Bellefield and Royalty Track Club's Tanice Barnett won their first road race at Sunday's Foska Oats 5K, which started and ended at Emancipation Park.

The race, which took athletes from Knutsford Boulevard onto Trafalgar Road, Waterloo Road, West Kings House Road, Constant Spring Road, Half Way Tree Road, and ended at Oxford Road, saw Campbell covering the course in 16 minutes, 3.67 seconds, while Barnett clocked 18 minutes, 58.25 seconds.

Wainard Talbert, the defending champion, did not participate in the event.

While noting that he missed Wainard Talbert's challenge, Campbell said: "It was a good race".

He added that it was easy "because the competition I was looking forward to getting, (from) Talbert, he wasn't here so it wasn't that difficult".

Never trained hard enough

Campbell finished ahead of André Drummond of MVP Track Club (16:26.88), Conroy Crossman of Edwin Allen (16:27.36), Kirk Edwards (16:31.99) and Zavion DaCosta of MVP (16:54.72).

The winner of the female section, Barnett, who finished ahead of Natoya Goule (20:15.85), Mackala Joseph of Edwin Allen (20:53.23), Taneisha Davis of Vere (21:13.07) and Rosemarie Aldridge of Bellefield (21:16.00), described the race as "pretty good".

She said this series is geared towards trails and in the end she was happy with her performance.

"I am pleased with how I am running right now," she said.

Meanwhile Goule, the defending champion, said it wasn't her day.

"I did not run a good race today," she said.

"I never trained hard enough for this (race), but for the next race it's going to be a different, a different race and different mood," she promised.

Asked if she was surprised with her first defeat in three years on the road, Goule said: "I knew that she is good, so I was not surprised.

"Some times you have to get beaten, so you will know what to do next time."

In the schools section, Edwin Allen won both male and female categories, while Vere and Holmwood finished second and third, respectively, in both sections.
