Misguided hero worship
published: Thursday | September 27, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Why do we need to put up pictures of our political leaders in government buildings and public offices? I have observed this practice for some years now and found it offensive and wasteful. Do we need to be reminded who the prime minister or finance minister is while we pay our taxes?

What is the cost of all those pictures and frames? If we must put up frames why not put up more inspiring images? Why not put up our National Symbols? In particular, why not put up the words of our National Anthem or our National Pledge? We certainly need more Jamaicans to be reminded to "work diligently and creatively ... in the service of their fellow men". These public banners would go a long way to integrate these important ideals into our daily lives. And, of course, we could see cost savings as there would be no need to change them when the administration changes.

At this time of change I look to see whether the new administration will persist with this misguided hero worship.

I am, etc.,
