The Editor, Sir:What could be inherently wrong with dual citizenship? In this post-Cold War era, why should service to Jamaica be restricted because of access to another country of residence? 'Out of many one people' can be just that. Or are we ready to ditch the motto?
Benefit can accrue to Jamaica from individuals who have had exposure to other systems, methods or thinking strategies. As long as that is possible, why block it? Case in point is the multifarious contribution of the many returning residents that flooded Jamaica in the late 1980s and the 1990s.
Naturally, if there is evidence to suggest that a particular individual who has dual citizenship would be inclined to do harm to Jamaica in satisfying his/her personal objectives, then that individual's political activity should be questioned. But in such cases let the stress be on the existence of real evidence/ precedent that malicious choices or actions are likely.
'Think local, act global'
The slogan 'think local, act global' should not be sniffed at. Global interaction is far too advanced to pigeon-hole Jamaicans. Which Jamaican would deny the pride he/she feels when remembering the fact that Jamaican-born Linford Christie is the only man in history to simultaneously hold the British, European, Commonwealth, World and Olympic 100m gold medals. And politics differs ... how?
