CHAMPIONS GLENMUIR High made it two wins from two starts in defence of their ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup title yesterday when a Ricardo Webb strike gave them a 1-0 win over Central High School in Zone I at the Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon.
By virtue of their win, which comes on the heels of their opening-day 6-2 victory over Old Harbour, Jackie Walters-coached Glenmuir have joined Old Harbour atop the group with six points. However, Old Harbour have played three games to Glenmuir's two.
Limited action
While Glenmuir were testing their mettle against Central, the fancied Rusea's, who are being tipped to dethrone them, saw only seven minutes of action in the Zone B against Merlene Ottey High School at Cold Spring in Hanover as bolts of lightning forced the referee to call a premature halt to the game.
"The referee had no choice but to call off the game as, in addition to the bolts of lightning, the playing surface was water-logged," said Rusea's co-coach Anthony 'Follies' Williams. "Under such trying conditions, it was definitely better to play it safe than risk injury to the players."
Nevertheless, in the limited action recorded, Rusea's got on the scoresheet courtesy of a sixth-minute strike by the wily Adrian Jones, who seemed poised for a brilliant game before its premature end.
In a day dominated by top-of-the-table clashes, the Zone E match between Munro and St. Elizabeth Technical turned out to be an anti-climax as the Hopeton Gilchrist-coached Munro ran out easy 3-0 winners.
By virtue of their win, Munro, who got their goals from Chris Wallace (two) and Jermaine Saams, are now the runaway leaders in the group with maximum nine points from their three games.
STETHS remain off the pace with three points from two games.
Lost win record
In the Zone H clash between Clarendon College and Denbigh, the latter lost their 100 per cent win record as they buckled to a 1-0 defeat.
The teams are now locked atop the group standings with six points each. However, Denbigh have played one more game.
In the big Savanna-la-Mar derby, Mannings, behind a Phillip Smith strike, clipped former champions Godfrey Stewart to take over sole leadership of the competition's Zone C with six points. The loss has left Godfrey Stewart with a mere point from their two games.
