Outfither a fitting winner of Feanny Memorial Trophy
published: Sunday | September 23, 2007

Javour Simpson

OUTFITHER, RUNNING as the even-money favourite with veteran jockey Ian Spence aboard, scored a fitting victory in yesterday's feature race for the Dr. Ralston Feanny Memorial Trophy over 1100 metres at Caymanas Park.

Owned by Alexander Haber, the three-year-old grey filly was saddled by 14-time champion trainer Philip Feanny, a son of the man in whose memory the race was run.

Feanny donated the trophy some years ago to perpetuate the memory of his father who was a noted owner and breeder before his death in 1999. For his contribution to racing, Dr. Feanny was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.

OUTFITHER, who finished third to LADY T in the 1000 Guineas back in April, made virtually all in a field of six native-bred, three-year-olds. (non-winners of two). She kept on well in the straight to win decisively from 9-2 chance DR. BADOO.

By Outrigger out of the Corsicana mare Korsage, OUTFITHER ticked off her second win from nine starts.

Double

Feanny duly completed the cup double when his chestnut filly, THE QUEEN, also went wire-to-wire in the round five co-feature for the Winnie Anglin Memorial Cup contested by eight native-bred, maiden two-year-old fillies.

After turning for home three lengths clear of the highly-fancied debutante IT IS I (9-5), THE QUEEN, a 4-5 favourite, had to be driven out in the last furlong in order to stave off IT IS I, a half sister to the 2004 Guineas and Oaks winner LATONIA by 1 1/4 lengths, then had to survive a Stewards' inquiry.

Running down off a true line in mid-stretch, THE QUEEN tightened the space on the ever-looming IT IS I on the rails an jockey Paul Ramsay was forced to check his mount midway through the last furlong, the result was allowed to stand.

Another winner to have survived an even more serious inquiry was this year's Derby hero THE BOMBER, who made most in the open allowance race over 1200 metres. Coming down sharply from the outside when taking over the lead at the half mile, THE BOMBER with title-chasing apprentice Javour Simpson aboard, held on grimly by a short head from the 4-5 favourite CALABASH BAY with another championship contender Omar Walker aboard.

the Bomber wins

Owned by Rosiedoll and trained by Patrick 'Wacky' Lynch, THE BOMBER, who was racing against older horses for the first time, has now won four races from five career starts with $3.6 million in stakes.

Trevor Simpson (49 wins) and Omar Walker (46) rode one winner each on the card, but both are being gobbled up by Javour Simpson (46) who has ridden 10 winners in the past four races days and was aboard two yesterday.
