Master of the art
published: Sunday | September 23, 2007

One of the five statues.

There are five statues strategically positioned at the Outameni Experience, which all depict the rich culture of the people who carve out the wealth of heritage that Jamaicans are proud of today.

The man behind the works of art that proudly portray what our heritage means in relation to people is Errol Diaz, an artistic, creative sculptor who operates out of Port Antonio. Coming out of his work one can easily see representations of the Tainos, Spaniards, Chinese, East Indian, Africans and the English.

A master at the art, Diaz took four weeks to create these masterpieces, which, he says, were built to last a lifetime. The secret he says is in the way you manipulate clay, fibreglass and foam to produce real-life looking images of human forms.

The sculptures that Diaz produced are just a fraction of what he does in that while Outameni is graced with his statuettes forming a great effect in completing the ambience of the aesthetic of the property the experience of such a craftsman extends to creating like pieces for at least 13 featured movies.

Sculptures depicting the people of yesteryear are without doubt a remarkable way of saying out loud, 'We know where we are coming from and where we are'.
