Hot Denbigh rock Claude McKay 4-0
published: Friday | September 21, 2007

Adrian Frater, News Editor

WESTERN BUREAU:

DENBIGH HIGH School registered their second win of the 2007 ISSA/Peps/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday when goals by substitute Onajee Neath (two), Okiem Henry and Christopher Bonner gave them a convincing 4-0 win over Claude McKay in their Zone H fixture at Claude McKay.

"I am still not fully satisfied with the performance of my team because we are missing too many easy chances," said Garfield Carney, the coach of the Denbigh team. "I believe the players are trying hard but even today we should have won by a double-figure score,"

First win of season

In the other two games in Zone H, Vere Technical registered their first win of the season when goals by Michael Moreland (two), Oniel Patrick and Roshawn Green gave them a big 4-0 win over Thompson Town while Lennon also entered the winners' column for the first time, outscoring Kellits 4-2.

Former champions Munro College also entered the winners' column for the second time this season when they blanked Newell 3-0 in their Zone E contest. Moses Watkiss, with two goals, and Okien Brown were the goalscorers for Munro.

"Our first-half performance was not up to expectations, maybe the players had difficulty handling the extreme heat," said Munro's coach Hopeton Gilchrist. "Nevertheless, the players should be commended for coming out easy winners of the game."

Impressive game

In the second of the two Zone E games, Black River started their season's campaign in impressive fashion, blanking Maggotty 3-0 at Maggotty. The game was also Maggotty's first of the season.

The competition will continue this afternoon with a Zone A game between Irwin and St. James high schools at Irwin High in Montego Bay, starting at 3:30 p.m.
