Probe into schoolboy football shooting
published: Friday | September 21, 2007

The Kingston Western police are now keeping a close watch on sections of Arnett Gardens after an incident in which a man was shot and injured at a Manning Cup football match between Charlie Smith and Denham Town high schools, at the Tony Spalding Sports Complex on Tuesday.

The incident took place during the half-time interval of the game with Charlie Smith leading 5-0.

Delroy Hewitt, superintendent in charge of the division, said the police know who the shooter is and will be bringing him to justice as soon as possible.

Supt. Hewitt told The Gleaner the police were unaware that a football match was taking place at the venue, which would suggest there may have been a breach of the Inter-secondary Schools Association's (ISSA) guidelines.

According to the ISSA guidelines, "The proper security at matches is the responsibility of the home team."

The guidelines further state: "At least four uniformed security officers should be on hand for the protection of the players and officials. These would be in addition to any personnel at the gates."
