'Di chick' gets chic
published: Friday | September 21, 2007

Altiyah 'di chic' Hewitt

Putting out a self-titled album does present a bit of a dilemma, though, as to how Hewitt's name should be spelt. And the choice is not only between 'Althea' and 'Altiyah', the latter seeming to be the preference, but 'di chic' has also gone through some changes.

Hewitt explains that at about six years old selector and MC GT Taylor, who hung out with her father, would greet her by the nickname 'chick chick'. "I guess I used to look like a stringbean," Hewitt laughs. From there it became 'di chick', a name that would be familiar to those who have seen the large graffiti of her name on walls.

No idea about graffiti

It is graffiti which Hewitt says she had no idea about "I am happy they stopped writing still. People kept asking me 'you don't know the person?' No. I probably met the person and don't know".

Still, she laughs as she says "I always say respect to that person. Somebody out there loves me". Hewitt said the graffiti, which started sometime last summer, first popped up close to where she lives. "I saw it and said 'OK then'," she said. "I saw some more and said 'alright then'. Somebody loves me dearly. I hope it is not a stalker. No stalking around here."

Now it is 'di chic', conveying a certain level of sophistication.
