SHANGHAI, China (AP):DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Germany can become the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals at the women's World Cup with a win over England today.
After an 11-0 waltz past Argentina in the first game in Group A, another win will guarantee the Germans a spot in the quarter-finals.
But England, who drew 2-2 with Japan in their first game, are expected to be much tougher.
"The game against England will be a totally different game," German coach Silvia Neid said.
"England are good in defence and plays well man to man. They play the same system as us. I expect it to be an open game," she said.
Germany will be led again by striker Birgit Prinz, who scored three times in the opening match and now has a record-tying 12 goals in the World Cup finals.
A win for England would be their first against Germany after 15 losses and a draw in 16 previous games.
A win or draw would give England a realistic chance of being the other team to advance from the group.
Dusting off to try again
England coach Hope Powell said her players had gotten over the disappointment of the game with Japan, who scored on virtually the last kick of the game to earn the draw.
"That is football. You move on, we've got another game to play," she said.
The England-Germany game at Shanghai's Hongkou Stadium will be played after Japan take on Argentina.
The group finishes on Monday with Germany playing Japan and England taking on Argentina.
