Norman Grant, president of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), says the agricultural sector is expected to recover from the impact of Hurricane Dean, which lashed the country on August 19, within a year.Speaking at a press conference held Wednesday at the JAS' office in downtown Kingston, Mr. Grant said that, based on relief efforts that have already been afforded to farmers and with the proper continued support, within nine to 12 months, the sector might achieve at least a standard level of recovery.
"I say that because, after Hurricane Ivan (in September 2004), growth started from the end of 2005," Grant said.
The president also noted that, in 2006, the agricultural sector recorded 20.1 per cent growth in domestic crop, in comparison to the previous year.
"There is no doubt that, given the right support, the agricultural sector will rebound," he said.
Grant also noted that the JAS was ready to work with the next Minister of Agriculture, as the Jamaica Labour Party brings the new administration after winning the September 3 general election.
Grant has called for a meeting with the incoming minister and the new administration with facilitators and members of the agricultural sector.
Grant said there were a number of issues that must be prioritised in order to foster the continued growth of the economy.
