Sweet dreams are made of these
published: Sunday | September 9, 2007

The Latin women are all the rave in western Jamaica and they know how to have fun. (From left) Ester Segui, Niurouis Serrano, Sophia Bernate, Aracilis Gallego, and Jamaicans Nathalie Spencer and Merricka Dyer frolicking at Groovy Grouper's Full Moon Frolic.

Far left: The last time we photographed this hunk of a man, he was one of two handsome men who had just entered Montego Bay. On Saturday night when we saw him again he was the envy of many men. MBJ's Preston Jennings is sandwiched between two hotties, Nikeshia Clarke (left) and Tanya Williston.- photos by Janet Silvera

Picture starlit skies, white canopies adorned with summer blossoms and tables decked in flowing white cloth, creating a peaceful atmosphere rendered tranquil by the waves of the sea.

Imagine backdrops of lush greenery and slowly burning tiki lamps, white beds with silk pillows, finger food served on silver platters fit for the gods, complete with hostesses in tiaras and fairy wings and you'll realise that Groovy Grouper's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream's' theme for their annual Full Moon Frolic was exactly what it promised to be.

In fact, it was a partygoer's fulfilled fantasy as Montegonians and their Latino friends brought life to Gloucester Avenue's 'Hip Strip'.

The early hours of the night had those present rendering screams and whistles to hit songs like Air Supply's All Out of Love, but this was only the beginning. As the night progressed, music of every genre penetrated the summer sky as Groovy Grouper lived up to its name and the dance floor became a choreography of patrons bubbling, moving and grooving to electrifying hit after hit.

The selections from the DJ ensured that patrons never had a moment of rest as they were either chanting or bopping. Forget dreams, it was heaven when Latin tunes saturated the venue. The resulting coordination of airborne hands and twisting hips was a sight to behold! Young and old enjoyed themselves as they boogied and 'drop foot', and when those feet got tired they lolled on the beds.

In addition to refreshing Kingston beer served on the house, there was no limit to the vast array of drinks prepared by the gentlemen of the bar.

At the end of the night, hopes and dreams were met and surpassed and patrons are already eyeing their Halloween costumes for the next occasion that will give them an opportunity to groove at the groovy spot.

Those in attendance included Veena and Denny Chandiram, who have just returned from a vacation of bliss in Bali, Horace and Dominique Peterkin from their stay in Canada, and Philipp Hofer and wife Fernanda are very much at ease with the latest addition of a bambino to their family.

Sightings: MBJ's Preston Jennings was out on the town, Air Jamaica's Owen Campbell is back in Jamaica and Ryan Matthew has bid the resort town au revoir as he takes up a new post in Kingston. Marcia McLaughlin is still camera-shy after so many years, Damien Kerr remains a handsome catch and Max Jardim can dance. Stephanie McLay, still recovering from the 'real Adonis' at the home office, Brian Jardim, Andre Dixon, Ian and Kathy Dear, Nick Sutherland, Antoinette Noble and Paulette Tai Chun-Hossman, Gaston Cantillo, Sharon Cunningham, Anna Kaye Russell, Melissa Chang and Dana Baugh, Christopher Clarke and Gail Graham.
