The Editor, Sir:
At the time of writing this letter, reports are that JPS had restored power to over 70 per cent of all its customers. This, by any standard, is phenomenal, all the more so because one can actually see the JPS workers and their contractors going the extra mile and working wonders.
So they deserve commendation for turning the situation around within one week.
I feel it is important that we all show appreciation, because the effort being displayed suggests that the workers must be operating at tremendous personal cost.
Indeed, up to the time of this letter, two of them have paid the supreme price. The Jamaica Public Service is not one of my favourite utilities, but as my mother always said, 'Gi di devil him due an' cuss 'im when yuh done'.
So, while we all take the restoration of light and power and other utilities as a matter of course and some of us grumble at the slightest provocation, let us spare a thought for JPS workers and their families ... the few who are giving so much to satisfy so many.
I am, etc.,
NEVILLE A.W GRAHAM
