BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

Authorities yesterday demolished the remainder of an apartment block which partially collapsed into a cavern early Sunday morning burying five members of a family beneath its rubble.

Officials at the Brittons Hill disaster area, just outside the capital, said the decision to remove the remainder of the building was taken after another portion collapsed overnight and any further fall would have jeopardised the lives of members of the search team who were continuing efforts to rescue the trapped family. Buried beneath the rubble and now feared dead are a 30-year-old man, his 27-year-old wife and three children, ages seven, three and one.
