Xavier Marshall gets second chance
published: Friday | August 24, 2007

Marshall

It looks like Xavier Marshall is out to make his way back into the national cricket team set-up as he was named in a squad for a development match on Sunday at Melbourne Oval.

Marshall, who fell out of favour with the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) fordisciplinary reasons, was yesterday named in a squad of 26 to play in the match.

Marshall, who represented the West Indies in two Test matches on their tour of Sri Lanka in 2005, and last played for Jamaica in the 2005/2006 regional first class tournament, has had a series of disciplinary problems.

He was subsequently dropped by the selectors, which means his call-up for this squad match, is a indication that he is being given another chance.

'Learnt from mistakes'

Chairman of the national selection committee, Ruddy Williams, said Marshall needs as many chances as possible.

"I believe he has learnt now (from mistakes) and should understand what he brings to the cricket," said Williams.

Williams, however, warns, "if he continues, he should know what will happen".

Meanwhile, Australian Brendon Nash, who has signed to play with Kingston Cricket Club with a hope to represent Jamaica and the West Indies, was also included.

"We need to look at him also," Williams added.

Also included in the squad, which will be split into two teams to be led by Carlton Baugh Jr. and Christopher Gayle, are Andre Creary, Schacoya Thomas, Nkrumah Bonner, and Horace Miller, the five players selected to the West Indies Under-19 training squad.

Marlon Samuels, along with Baugh and Gayle are the other players with Test experience.

The match is set to start at 9:30 a.m. and players are asked to report to the ground, no later than 8:00 a.m.

Observe players

Williams said the reason behind this development match, which should have been held last week, is to see as many players as possible.

"It's very important that I get to see much of the players who haven't played for Jamaica, so I have taken the opportunity to see them ... and from now, any Sunday or during the week I get the opportunity to see them play competitively, I will take," he explained.

He said another reason will also be to look at young players to replace the ones who have been failing over the years.

The squad: Chris Gayle, Carlton Baugh Jr., Damion Henry, Wayne Simpson, Junior Stewart, Jowayne Robinson, Fabian Anderson, Joseph Palmer, Boris Hutchinson, Marlon Samuels, Donovan Sinclair, Donovan Pagon, Xavier Marshall, Keith Hibbert, Shane Powell, Andre Russell, Dwight Stewart, Andre McCarthy, Brendon Nash, Shawn Findlay, Chadwick Walton, Neive McNally, Andre Creary, Schacoya Thomas, Nkrumah Bonner and Horace Miller.
