The Editor, Sir:I would like to use this opportunity to thank Power 106FM and Spirit Airlines for their service to Jamaicans living abroad, during and after the passage of Hurricane Dean.
During the hurricane, Jamaicans living abroad were able to connect with the people at home by tuning in to Power 106 online. Dervan Malcolm, with his calm and composed voice, made sure that we were informed, without spurring feelings of panic Morrison and the rest of the Power 106FM staffers who worked through the 12-hour period were stalwarts who deserve all the commendation that they can get. The important thing about this feed through Power 106FM compared to the other media houses was that the service was provided free of cost and, therefore, was available to anyone with a good Internet connection. Thank you, Power 106FM.
I also want to commend Spirit Airlines for not raising their fares on travellers who would like to visit Jamaica the weekend following the storm. For many of us in South Florida, for example, who wanted to be home with family, friends and property during the storm but could not, it was great to see that for less than US$200 we could get a return ticket to Jamaica. It is so important to be with the ones you love following a traumatic event and also to take provisions that may be needed at this time. Thank you, Spirit!
To all the others who worked so hard to ensure that the Jamaican people were safe and secure, thank you!
I am, etc.,
