Tosh, Cliff make 'World Hits'
published: Friday | August 24, 2007

Michael Lee, Gleaner Writer

World Music label Putumayo Records will release World Hits, an 11-track compilation of some of the genre's greatest songs, next week Tuesday.

The album includes songs from two of Jamaica's musical legends, Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff. Tosh and Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones have the first track, Don't Look Back, which is a cover of The Temptations hit. This song broke into the United States top 100 chart in 1978.

Jamaica's legends collaborate

Tosh, who was murdered at his St. Andrew home in 1987, met Jagger at the One Love Peace Concertin October 1978.

The singer was once signed to Rolling Stones Records.

Jimmy Cliff has the sixth track, the seminal The Harder They Come, which was the title song of the 1972 movie of the same name.

Both song and movie made Cliff a superstar.

In addition to Don't Look Back and The Harder They Come, Mexico-born guitarist Carlos Santana's Oye Como Va, Toure' Kunda's Emma, Miriam Makeba's Pata Pata, Lambada by Kaoma, and Youssou N'Dour's 7 Seconds are included on World Hits.

World Hits is a great album that captures music mainly from the 1970s when reggae, Latin and African music drifted into the mainstream.
